As you may remember, I had to put my beloved APHA mare down in June. On a happier note, I've got a new horse! A two year old Gypsy Vanner gelding, named Loki!
This was him before he came home to me. I got him from Kathy Yore, a WONDERFUL lady, in Virgina! She owns a Gypsy Vanner breeding farm, named Legacy Vanners, with beautiful stock.
I instantly fell in love with Loki. How could you not fall in love with such a beautiful boy!
He is my dream come true. I've wanted a Gypsy Vanner for years.
Her trainer, Barb, another wonderful woman, delivered him to our farm, in Ohio. Loki has done wonders for healing my broken heart. I just wish that Shakey could have met him. She would have loved him.
We've had a few minor issues, as you would expect with bringing an untrained baby home. The biggest issue was getting him to realize that the sheep were not chew toys, or things to be chased.
Run Liesl, run!
We tried holding Loki and letting the sheep loose, but it worked better holding the sheep, so they couldn't run, and letting Loki loose to sniff them.
We then graduated to having them all loose together, with
us watching over them.
Finally we had success!
However, by and large, he's been an incredible joy to work with. He has mastered walking over tarps, and getting booped with pool noodles.
But most of all, we love his incredibly sweet demeanor. He's the sweetest horse I've ever met. He loves everyone he meets! He will kiss anyone that will let him. He nickers when he sees me coming and he comes over to greet me when I walk through the gate.
Perhaps what's given me the most joy, though, is that he is turning my non-horse-person husband into a horse person. Loki ADORES Steve. He follows him everywhere. And to my utter surprise, the feeling seems mutual, as Steve gives him lots of attention.
I never thought I would see this image! (Don't
worry, I've since taught Steve not to hold the
leadrope like that)
LV Loki is a fantastic addition to our family and we love him very much. I am so happy and grateful to have my boy!
Thank you to Kathy Yore, of Legacy Vanners, in Chase City, Virginia. If you ever want a quality Gypsy, talk to Kathy. She has beautiful stock and she's an absolute joy to deal with. She is honest, trustworthy, and I just can't say enough good things about her.
